A movie about birds…just birds? That didn't sound very
interesting to me, but everybody was giving it rave reviews,
so I figured I'd check it out.
What I heard was true: it was only birds...
…but it was also very good.
The movie follows the migration of various types of birds
from the north to the south and then back again. What really
stood out about this movie was the amazing cinematography.
The camera was literally right next to the birds; it was
almost as if you were migrating with them. Aside of the actual
flight scenes, there were shots of the birds taking care of
their young, eating, and even escaping avalanches. One of
the most memorable scenes involved the migration of a group
of ducks. It was a peaceful scene of flying ducks, when
suddenly shots rang out and then the ducks began to drop.
It was so frustrating, because they had come so far only to
be shot down when they were so close, but at the same time
it was sort of beautiful, because the birds fell so gracefully.
This was just one of the many breathtaking shots included in
Winged Migration.
What you have to remember about Winged Migration is
that it's a documentary, and not a traditional movie. There
is very little information or narration given during the movie;
the focus is instead on the actual migrating going on. The
drawback is that some of the shots start to look the same, and
without some kind of story or narration guiding us along, it tends
to get a bit dull in parts. On the other hand, a lot of
narration could have bogged down the story and distracted from
what was really important: the birds.
what was really important: the birds.
Winged Migration is not the typical action-packed
summer blockbuster, but it is an excellent documentary with an
abundance of beautiful images. Try something new for a change
and go check out Winged Migration.
