Thank goodness for minor characters, because The Holiday would
have been a total snooze without them.
I had expected hilarious adventures from two women who switch houses for
their Christmas holidays in a foreign country. I had also expected more
laughs from the character Amanda (Cameron Diaz), especially since she gets to
pair up with the Oh-so-wonderful Jude Law. Instead, the story with Cameron
and Jude were mainly making out scenes, with no content at all, except
physical. Maybe there was a laugh here and there (three to be exact), but
there were many scenes that just went on for way too long. For example, the
making out. Making Out. MAKING OUT.
While on the other side, Kate's holiday gave a more heart-warming story.
Maybe it's me, but whenever there's a grandpa and listening to his stories
about the past, it's a sure win for tears and smiles. Eli Wallach is famous
in the movie industry, but he refuses to attend any events that are dedicated
in his honor because he feels embarassed about his old age. So Kate
decides to help Wallach out of his seclusion during her two week stay, while
Wallach decides to set Kate and Jack Black together. Kate's love issues are
also hilarious, and her expressions are always innocent and convincing. There
were many "stab-to-the-heart" moments, which is always entertaining
in a good way.
The minor characters have interesting pasts, and through Kate's
acquaintance with them, I was actually able to not dislike the entire movie.
The ending was seriously insufficient though, it was as though the movie was
unfinished, and it wasn't much of a cliffhanger as it was just unsatisfying.
The movie had a lot of loose ends, but one thing is for sure, Eli Wallach is
an awesome grandpa.
