Taylor Greer was born and raised in rustic Kentucky and takes off as soon as she can, attaining her goal to graduate high school without getting pregnant. In a half-working car heading west, she picks up a new life when she is spontaneously given an American Indian child with an unknown but dark past. Taylor and the girl end up in Tucson, Arizona, settling in with the help of an older woman who runs a tire shop and underground haven for illegal immigrants, and their new roommate, a young single mother herself.

Taylor's life is a realistic adventure. Wild things happen but always in ways that make sense and seem authentic. Her character has enough spunk to wrestle anything that comes to her, but is normal enough for anyone to relate to. She takes complete control of her life, yet plays it all by ear.

Barbara Kingsolver's writing is beautiful, Taylor's voice is perfectly every-day poetic and really funny. It's a speedy read, but full quality. This is a book that everyone should read. It is about living your life and dealing with the crazy things that ensue. I can't imagine that anybody could not like this novel.
