At two in the morning, chewing my umpteenth pack of gum while trying
feverishly to understand this foreign language I call Calculus and glaring at
the stack of college applications, recommendations, secondary school reports,
and midyear reports yet to be completed, I came to realize something: Gum is a
good thing.
In the past two weeks, I have become a gum connoisseur. Here's my review of
various brands and types.
Best of the bunch: Stride's Spearmint gum. Not only does it
contain corny little quotes on the inside of the intriguing fold-out package,
but it tastes good for hours on end. Plus, I don't feel the need to swallow it
shortly after inserting it in my mouth.
Runners-up, in no particular order:
Trident White's Cinnamon gum: It tastes like the best part of a cinnamon
roll, sweet without that annoying sticky-hand side effect.
Dentyne Softchew's Wild Winter: It starts out sweetly strong, with a
definite minty taste and a vanilla undertone, then progresses to a very, very
sweet stage, where its smooth texture and flavor may make you want to swallow
it.
Orbit's Sweet Mint: Remember that minty flavor in mint chocolate chip ice
cream? Well, this gum captures the essence of that childhood memory without all
the sugar and calories to ruin the experience.
Icebreaker's Winter Mint: It wakes up your mouth as you chew. Recommended
for foggy San Francisco mornings.
Extra Spearmint: While the color may initially put you off, soon the
long-lasting flavor will compensate for the highlighter color.
7-11's Kona Mocha gum: It tastes like a cappuccino. Yes, it has sugar, but
you won't care after you try it.
Orbit's Winter Mint Whitening Gum: It starts off with a crunch, which helps
you get rid of all of those nasty tensions you may or may not be
experiencing.
