Last night after watching Grey's Anatomy, a show I am obsessed with, I
came to see more in it than just a series of relationships. It has a
fundamental truth embedded in its plot: emotions are messy.
Why else would Meredith ditch a veterinarian, who loves her to death, for
Derek, a guy that treats her either as a sex object or as if she doesn't
exist? Why would Izzy cut the cord to a guy's life support machine, a guy she
just happens to become engaged to and a guy who leaves her $1.6 billion? Why
would George completely shut down after his girlfriend sleeps with another
guy? Why would Addison be walking around, half dead, and still sleeping with
the guy she cheated on her husband with?
All of these questions have one answer: humans are irrational beings. A
series of chemicals, which include adrenaline and endorphins, are released in
our body by our body makes us act in all sorts of crazy ways. Emotions are
created by our bodies, often without our permission.
So, this begs the question: are we slaves to our bodies, or are our
bodies our servants?
