Let the setting be an old desert with people living in there. Pueblos
sprouting from the ground like flowers of spring, but yet, not as colorful.
Let the characters rise from our imaginations. One by the name of, let's say,
Eva. The other, by the name of Laura, just a year younger. See, these two
girls have been friends since grade school. They don't know much about
each other, but they understand each other's thoughts. Here, it's a hot
summer's day where sand paths are to be worn away by the bustling people in
the small green farmer's market. Though our two little friends don't live
here, they are here for a quick stay. Let the journey begin!
"Eva! You up for some tennis?" Laura shouts just as she passes
her very good friend on the street
"Sure, what harm would there be?" she then answers taking the
racket that Laura has offered her.
So, they immediately started playing right then and there. Since there
were no courts in this impoverished desert land, they hit the ball so it
bounces off the walls of the houses and back down to which they ran and hit
the ball again. Then, however, they reached a section of this relatively
small town where there were dark alleys around every corner. But they didn't
see it, it was no less the same as the others.
One of the girls hit the ball too hard and it bounced into one of the
many alleys. Eva, as the older one, takes the responsibility and goes to get
the ball back. While doing so, she one of the houses caught her attention.
You see, they don't have doors on their houses since it's set in a desert.
Eva is then lured into the house and didn't come back out. Laura was
paying no such attention what so ever, but then, Eva's sudden scream awakened
whatever that was still sleeping. Laura froze, What happened?
Eva?
Just then, a man in a tropical green shirt came out of the same ally she
saw Eva go into and ran away. Laura had no TIME to think! She ran directly to
the nearest stall of the farmer's market and blurted out, "Someone's in
danger! Call the police!" Eva regretted that she didn't help her friend,
and just went calling people out one by one to get the cops. There was
this one stall in which two people laughed as she said so.
"You little kids are so ignorant," one woman said another.
"Yes, you're right. She or he MAY be in danger, but what difference
does that make? One less person, one less to feed!" The other lady
laughed.
"What do you mean?" Asked Laura out of breath.
"This place was never meant for the living anyways. So what if one
gets lost" They continued talking.
"HAVE OTHER PEOPLE BEEN DISAPPEARING TOO?" Too scared to
imagine what could've happened, she ran to the next stall where she talked to
an old toad and a talking snake.
The minute she realized it on the other hand, she felt really stupid.
What am I doing? I think the heat's getting to me. Now wondering if
she'll ever help her friend, if there's even police around at ALL, she
dragged her tired feet along the dry yellow sand ground.
To be continued...
