In the midst of a bit of controversy about the alleged accuracy or lack
thereof in the anybody-can-edit online encyclopedia Wikipedia, I feel that
it's my duty to inform the public of an alternate information source in which
the can have absolute faith. Faith, that is, not in the accuracy of the
information, but that every statement they read will be confounded, confused,
twisted, stilted, biased, and just plain not true. This is Uncyclopedia, the self-described "Content-free
encyclopedia that anyone can edit."
The variety of articles found here, is quite impressive, covering
every topic from AAAAAAAAA!, to Zombie Jesus, and the quality, like that of
Wikipedia, is similarly ranged, from one stupid sentence, to a few pages of
well thought-out, organized, and illustrated blatant and hilarious lies.
After browsing though it for a while, one finds surprising consistency among
articles, generally relevant to Oscar Wilde, Kitten Huffing, and the like,
making it easy to follow links from one article to the next, and relish the
complete disregard for relevance to the outside world.
Perhaps more fun than reading the articles, and infinitely more
difficult, is contributing to the site. Unlike Wikipedia, where one has to
actually know something about a subject to write an article on it,
Uncyclopedic contributors need no more qualification than some basic English
skills, and a good sense of humor. These qualities are, however,
difficult to come by on the internet, making the actual creation of a good
Uncyclopedic article somewhat more difficult than a good encyclopedic article
at Wikipedia, and the majority of new articles end up deleted.
