Don’t Hate the Haight

by Wednesday, November 18th, 2009.

Eccentric. Intriguing, Unique. These words capture the real reason San Francisco stands out to many. And there’s no better place to turn when looking to find culture than Haight Street itself. Filled with outrageous shops and delicious spots to eat, these eighteen blocks are definitely worth checking out. Be sure to check our own personal list of favorite eateries and shops so that you won’t miss out on the best Haight has to offer!

Top 5 Places to Eat:

  1. Escape From New York Pizza: This delicious New York thin style pizza joint is a great place to grab a bite with friends. Relax for a bit in this casual atmosphere after you order a slice or a whole pizza to share with friends.
  2. El Balazo: Order any type of Mexican food such as burritos, tacos, enchiladas, or nachos and sit around in a restaurant with a very embellished and bright interior. Check out a sports game on the T.V while you eat, or watch people through the mirrored walls.
  3. Asqew Grill: This place serves all foods on a skewer. Choose from a range of cuisine from kebabs to caramel apples. The tables in the restaurant are designed in the shape of jigsaw puzzles and the photos on the walls will be a new sight to most people.
  4. The Pork Store Café: This place is known for its selection of pork and different meats. At first, this café was a butcher shop, but became a well known restaurant in the 50′s. The food here is delicious and there are many different selections.
  5. Best of Thai: This casual Thai food restaurant has fast service and delicious food. You can sit in the restaurant with friends, or watch the chefs cook your food when you come to pick up your order for takeout.

Other favorites: Zona Rosa, Cha Cha Cha, and Squat and Gobble

Top 5 Places to Shop:

  1. Wasteland, Held Over, Aardvarks: These 2nd hand, “vintage”, shops are the best place to find used, yet original and cheap clothing. It is possible to spend hours in these stores because of the wide range of different clothing. These stores always have something to offer everyone, it may just take a while to find it.
  2. Piedmont Boutique: Looking for a great Halloween costume? This is the place to go. Piedmont Boutique has crazy, fun, and outrageous clothing options that are perfect for Halloween and costume parties. Come in and check out the bright and funky clothing that is perfect for any costume.
  3. True: This store is a women’s clothing store, a men’s clothing store, and a men’s shoe store. True is known for its hip-hop/ skater t-shirt designs and wide range of Nike shoes and “SF” hats. Girls can expect the same type of clothing as well.
  4. Cheap Thrills: Cheap Thrills is filled with tons of joke knick-knacks and toys that are perfect for gifts or any other occasions. Many of the things in this store are not for every day use, but you can definitely make your friend laugh if you get him or her something from this store.
  5. Behind the Postoffice & Ambiance: If you are looking for more high end clothing, these stores are the places to go. Both stores are a bit more expensive but have great clothes. Clothes from these stores are similar to clothing found on Union or Fillmore St.

Other Favorites: Bang-On, Buffalo Exchange, and Villains
