Duma
There is a disturbance in the African plains when a mother cheetah, caring for several cubs, is attacked and killed by a pride of hunting lions. In the movie Duma, a young boy, Xan, and his father discover a cheetah cub crawling in the middle of the road. They bring the cub home and raise him like a domesticated animal. Within the first few days of the cub’s arrival to their home, they decide to name him Duma. The family lives a happy and carefree life until Xan’s father passes away. Xan’s mother is left with no choice, but to move into a relative’s house in the city and find a job there. As a result, Xan is required to give up Duma to the wildlife conservation. Xan is hesitant in giving Duma up because of their bond and a request from his dad to set Duma free into the wild when he was ready. Determined to separate Duma from the caged fate, Xan sets off on a journey to return his beloved cheetah to his rightful home.
Duma is a great family movie that shows many different bonds an individual can create not just with human beings, but with animals as well. Connections between family, friends, and pets are all prominent in this movie. At first, I was captured by this movie because of Duma. My interest in animals drove me to continue watching and it was only later in the movie when I was concentrating on the actual film. Each scene and event helped build up my curiosity. Is Duma going to be alright in the wild? How will Xan and Duma survive in the wild without food? Will Duma remain an obedient pet or will he allow his animal instincts to take over? In the end, this movie did not disappoint. Duma showed me the importance of strong bonds and it taught me to be grateful for all the love and compassion I have around me. The many lessons embedded in Duma are those that a viewer can learn and keep for a lifetime. It is hard for me to think that a fan of action or horror movies would enjoy watching Duma. My idea of viewers for this movie would be nature-lovers and animal-lovers, but if anyone is interested in watching a heartwarming adventure movie, go out and pick up Duma.
